Into the Wild with Leon Lorenz

With the daylight fast disappearing late one evening I was fortunate to be able to film this great gray owl swoop silently down off its perch in an attempt to capture a little rodent like a mouse or vole under the snow. It tried numerous times however each time it pulled up without going into the snow after it.

The owl, of course, cannot see the little rodent under the snow, however great gray owls have such keen hearing that they can pinpoint their lunch with extreme accuracy from up to 50 metres away.
