One person is dead after a single vehicle incident involving a commercial vehicle on Highway 16.
Cpl. Kelly Barrie with the McBride RCMP told The Goat the detachment received a report of a single motor vehicle incident near Dome Creek at about 5 p.m. Tuesday evening. McBride RCMP attended the scene with members of the BC Ambulance Service and the McBride Fire Department.
Police say the vehicle hit a patch of ice while driving on the highway and began to skid. The driver was unable to steer out of the skid, which caused the vehicle to slide off the road and into the ditch, coming to a stop off the highway.
Barrie says there were two occupants inside the vehicle, one of whom was determined to be deceased at the scene of the incident.
“The other occupant was transported to Prince George by ambulance with minor injuries,” Barrie said.
RCMP believe the cause of the incident was a mixture of weather and road conditions.
“The temperature was hovering around -1°C with a mixture of rain, snow, and sleet,” Barrie said.
Highway 16 was closed in both directions for about 3 hours after the incident before reopening at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Barrie said no further details will be released at this time to give police the opportunity to advise the victim’s family.
