The evacuation order issued for areas of Valemount earlier this evening has been cancelled, meaning evacuated residents can return to their homes. The area of Cedarside is still on evacuation alert, so residents should still be prepared to leave on short notice.
The evacuation alert issued for other areas of the village has also been cancelled.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George issued the order after a fire ignited near Canoe Road at 4:11 p.m. It affected properties east of Highway 5, south of 17th Avenue and north of the Canoe River, but the Regional District could not confirm how many properties were affected by the order, nor could they confirm which area was under alert when asked by The Goat.
DriveBC is warning drivers of limited visibility along Highway 5 between Albreda Pit Rd and Loseth Rd North Access for 29.7 km due to wildfire smoke.
BCWS says crews are assisting the local Valemount Fire Department and are currently responding with airtankers, skimmers, helicopters and ground crews.
