As the devastating wildfire rips its way through the Jasper townsite, wildland firefighters without self-contained breathing apparatuses have evacuated to Hinton at 8:30 p.m. due to the poor air quality. Structural firefighters continue to try to save key infrastructure, with more structural firefighters on the way.

“Firefighters … are working to save as many structures as possible and protect critical infrastructure, including the wastewater treatment plant, communications facilities, the Trans Mountain Pipeline,” Parks Canada said in a post on Facebook.

Just after 6pm MDT, the fire burning south of Jasper along the Icefields Parkway reached the edge of the townsite. Since then, it has devoured homes, businesses, and at least one gas station.

The National Park said that “significant loss” has occurred in Jasper, but couldn’t confirm the extent of the damage to specific locations or neighborhoods. Sprinkler systems were set up around town earlier today in anticipation.

“We are sensitive that residents, business owners, visitors, and those with connections to Jasper want to know the state of their homes, businesses, treasures and favourite places. Our focus continues to be on saving as many structures as possible,” it said.

Petro Canada, Bright Spot, Jasper Maligne Lodge are three buildings confirmed to be burned.

The park added that there won’t be any further updates shared on Wednesday night, but it will provide more updates and information on Thursday.
