Max, Sofia, Cali and Matthais had a special chance at an inside look at the Valemount Fire Hall Oct. 28th after taking part in the department’s fire prevention week contest. Fire Chief Rick Lalonde says the partnership with the school is a chance to remind students and their families about the importance of smoke alarms, the lack of which leads to unnecessary deaths in Canada each year. Cali said her favourite part was going into the Fire Truck. Matthais said his favourite part was everything. /LAURA KEIL

During their visit to the fire hall, Sofia, Matthias and Cali test out the specialized stretcher used for extracting patients from the Valemount Bike Park. The Fire Department is the only group that has such a stretcher and the training to use it, and thus is called out to assist the ambulance with all major accidents at the bike park, about a dozen every summer. /LAURA KEIL
