Social media speaker Jesse Miller spoke to high schoolers, teachers, parents and RCMP from McBride and Valemount last week about the potential pitfalls of social media – whether it be sexting, Facebook or Snapchat. Sitting on the stage of the McBride high school, he was animated in his storytelling and his warnings. “I’m not anti-internet, but I’m about embracing it for what it is and continuing the conversation.” With the Internet, every child is a broadcaster, he says. Yet, are we equipping kids to deal with this huge freedom? He stressed how important it is for parents to get to know their kids and to continue talking about use and mis-use of the internet and cell phones. His lessons aren’t just for kids either. He says if adults don’t walk the talk, kids won’t either.
Miller’s website “Mediated Reality” offers tips and articles about the issues he speaks about. He also gives talks to parents, educators, companies and non-profits.
