A record number of horses and riders participated in the Robson Valley Backcountry Horsemen’s fourth annual poker ride on Sept. 20th. The last weekend of summer had 69 horse-and-rider pairs participating in the Robson Valley Chapter’s fundraiser, held on Ray and Louella Long’s property along Hinkleman Road.
Riders came from Tete Jaune, Dunster, McBride, Valemount, Dawson Creek, Blue River, Prince George, Barriere, Clearwater, Mackenzie, Hay Lakes and Lac La Biche, and each participant received a prize from one of 36 sponsors. A corn roast and other tasty treats waited at the finish line, and a bull elk even showed up to add excitement at the conclusion of the event.
First place winner was Judy Lestander, second was Doug Trask, third was Amanda Will and Worst Hand was achieved by Sandy Kirtzinger. Thirteen junior riders participated this year, and funds raised will go towards maintaining and expanding local walking and horse trails.
