The McBride and Valemount food banks had a little more to go around this hoiliday season after several generous donations. John Peterson of Yellowhead Realty sits on the board of The Mutual Fire Insurance Company of BC. At a recent meeting, Peterson mentioned the need for donations for the local food banks. The insurance company’s board allotted two donations of $500 – one for Valemount and one for McBride. But after hearing about the insurance company’s donation, Peter Reimer, the notary in Valemount, decided to pitch in his own $500 along with $500 matched from the owner of Underwriters Insurance. The Valemount Food Bank will thus get $1,500, or enough for 23 Christmas hampers. Dorothy Jones of the Valemount Food Bank says a Christmas food hamper costs roughly $65 and they have more than 35 families on their list. Jones says the money is a big help. “Our money is getting really low. We need to get turkeys for Christmas.” Reimer said of his personal donation “It’s a no-brainer. We can’t let one of our insurance companies do something and do nothing here.”
