Valemount’s Omar Medina has qualified for the national high school track and field event in Langley this August, and collected four gold medals at a Prince George meet in early June.
At the meet Medina collected a gold medal in the 100m and 200m dashes, high jump and long jump at the Spruce Capital Invitational Meet.
The week before, he won a silver medal at the BC High School track and Field Championship which qualified him for Nationals for the first time.
Now he’s eager to qualify for Team BC, which would allow him to attend a camp with Olympic coaches to prepare for the National competition. Either way, he has already qualified to attend as an individual. He says he wants to be at his peak in July when he qualifies for Team BC at what’s known as “the Jamboree.”
The 15-year-old has been living in Prince George and doing his high school studies online so he can train during the track season. He is a member of the Prince George Track and Field Club.
At the provincial championship, Medina jumped 6.1 feet, just 0.01 metres behind the first place winner.
