Valemount mountaineers Reiner Thoni and Carla McKirdy won first place in the co-ed division of the annual MEC Vert180 Ski Mountaineering Race in Calgary Dec. 3rd.
Competitors do as many laps as they can in three hours raced either as individual or as team relay.
The course is a loop with about 100m vertical ascent ending with a short boot-pack, then 100m descent.
Thoni and McKirdy did 17 laps over the course of the three hours. They called their team Valemount Skimo.
Reiner has placed in many national and international ski mountaineering competitions and is one of nine members of the Canadian ski mountaineering team. Hehas been overall Canadian cup winner and Canadian skimo champion for several years in a row.
